Once again, I regret that I only have five stars to give!
After reading and enjoying the first book in this series, I worried that the second wouldn't live up to my expectations. Wrong! In fact, I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Because Taylor established her complex worlds in the first book, she is free to explore the characters and their stories more fully in the second.
The plot was so full of tension that I struggled to put it down. Every chapter leaves the reader on the edge of her seat. It is a very grim story, but at the same time, it never becomes unbearably awful (which is quite a feat given the circumstances of the book). Once again, the writing is flawless and beautiful, and the worlds are exotic. There is such terrible heartache in this story alongside such wonderful joy.
The worst thing about the book, however, is that the ending leaves the reader breathless. I am dying to find out what happens next, but unfortunately, that won't be happening until the third book is released!
A final warning: this book is considered YA, but it is intended for very mature YA readers.
